Brook Lose Cup Thriller

Moston Brook’s hopes of securing an unprecedented quadruple were ended in a thrilling Lancashire Amateur Cup quarter final clash with Southport and Ainsdale FC.

Although they went behind early on, Brook responded thanks to Zach Bostock’s 20th-minute piledriver. The encounter was end-to-end from there but penalties were needed to separate the sides.

It wasn’t to be for Brook, who lost agonisingly 4-3.

Elsewhere in cup action, Salford Vics progressed in the Rhodes Cup, after seeing off Village Manchester. After a breathless first half with five goals that saw Vics edge ahead, they pulled away in the second, eventually running out 5-2 winners.

In the Wray Cup group stage,there was a major upset as Hillgate defied their lowly league position at the foot of Division Three to defeat Division Two leaders Bollington H&L 4-3.

Salford Vics Reserves were also on form as they accounted for Stoconians 6-1 while Old Stretfordians reserves beat Richmond Rovers 3-0 and Dom Doyle won 3-1 hosting Badger Casuals.

Santos and Elton Hargreaves shared four goals. Matt Wilkes put Elton Hargreaves ahead and although Ben Marshall’s header restored parity, Harry Dearden ensured the visitors were in front at half-time. But Santos secured a draw through Reece Holden, who equalised five minutes from time.

There was also plenty of action in the group games for the Hellawell Shield. Division C leaders Sublime Athletic progressed thanks to a 3-1 win over Richmond Rovers Reserves – a scoreline matched by Barrhill in their victory over Irlam Steel Development.

Manchester Saints kept up their improved form with a 2-1 win over Didsbury Reserves and Milnrow Firgrovia won their local derby with Fittonhill Allstars 4-2.

Signol Athetic Reserves shared four goals with Village Manchester Thirds and both Moston Brook Fourths and Saddleworth 3D Reserves failed to find the back of the net in their game.

Premier Division action was limited to one game which saw Irlam Steel Rangers boost their title ambitions by edging a local derby with third-placed North Walkden to eventually prevail 3-2.

In Division One Bedians had the chance to close the gap on non-playing leaders Hazel Grove but they were held to a 1-1 draw by a gutsy Moston Brook Reserves. Elsewhere, a mid-table contest between Trafford United and Mello also ended 1-1.

There was one game in Division Three and it saw South Manchester beat Saddleworth 3D 2-0 to record their second win of the season and lift themselves off the foot of the table.

Didsbury FC stay top of Division A after a 5-2 win at Bury Ams Reserves, with Mellor Reserves remaining a point behind after an exciting 5-3 defeat of Trafford United Reserves.

Rochdalians are enjoying a great run of results and continue to stay on the heels of the top two with an emphatic 5-2 win over AFC Oldham.

Signol Athletic bounced back after some recent struggles with a fine 6-4 derby win at Spurley Hey Reserves

The other game went virtually to last kick with Altrincham Hale winning 1-0 at Manchester Rovers to stay in the top four.

Timperley Villa extended their lead at the top of Division B to four points with a gritty 2-1 win over AFC Oldham Reserves. They benefited from a slip from second-placed AFC Stockport, who suffered a shock 4-1 defeat hosting Broadheath Central.
